Legal Aid Society Nyc Internship

In the winter of 2018, Legal Aid partnered with Harvard University to offer “Winterships” to Harvard students. The Winternship allowed students to accompany staff for 1-3 days during their winter vacation in January, giving them the opportunity to observe court hearings and ask questions. It provides participants with hands-on experience and educates students about the work the Legal Aid Society does to serve New Yorkers. Please see our job descriptions and application deadlines on the Harvard website. Although I didn`t know if I wanted to enroll in law school before I started this articling program, I was impressed by the passion and advocacy of the legal aid lawyers I worked with. I now know that I want to be a public defender and I am particularly interested in juvenile delinquency cases. I hope to return to Legal Aid in a few years! We will be happy to answer your questions. Requests can be sent to our e-mail box at jobpostquestions@legal-aid.org. Our goal is to recruit and retain the best law students, lawyers, paralegals, social workers, investigators and administrative staff who share a vision – that no New Yorker is denied access to justice because of poverty. I have previously had the privilege of appearing before the court for admission, a hearing where children are first assigned to a LAS attorney after an initial petition has been filed by the Children`s Services Administration (“ACS”) allegations of abuse and/or neglect. Twenty minutes after I arrived at the office on the first day, my LAS Internship Coordinator invited me to attend an ongoing hearing to ensure ACS was meeting its legal obligations and to verify a parent`s adherence to an individual service plan recommended by the agency.

Over the next few weeks, I will have the opportunity to attend client interviews, attend a hearing and conduct legal research for my direct LAS supervisor. Working with lawyers like Kimberly Wong, Esq. and Angela Hines, Esq. who advocate for and observe their clients` interests has been an incredible and inspiring experience. “The first week of my internship was hectic. After completing orientation and training, I was personally introduced to the Juvenile Right Practice team I was assigned to as an articling student: an interdisciplinary team of lawyers, paralegals and social workers who tenaciously advocate for the rights, needs and interests of children appearing in family court in New York City. They were very welcoming and helpful. Many of the lawyers I have met have offered to accompany them to court and review the incredible work they are doing in this area. I can`t remember the last time I was so enthusiastic about the job. “I enjoyed working with friendly and dedicated people who create a welcoming work environment. It was fascinating to learn more about the whole recruitment process and how it works. Nevertheless, the impact it has on a business. My internship helped me develop skills that I can use in the future. I am curious to learn more about different HR practices and how Legal Aid serves its clients. The Legal Services Society offers rewarding internships to students, giving them the opportunity to gain skills and hands-on experience serving our clients.
