Long E Spelling Rules

Since the spelling rule “i before e” does not apply after the letter c, some long sounds /e/ are written with the letters ei. Here are some examples of long /e/ words written with the letters ei: I tried to analyze the problem: maybe she rebelled against the different stages of vowel searching, discovered that there was a consonant between the vowels, and tried short and long vowels to determine which one worked in this particular case. And she just thought it was easier to ignore all this? The more we worked with it, the more convinced I was that she didn`t know which sound was short and which was long, so we spent several days identifying and producing those sounds. Eventually, I really thought she had it, but it was also obvious that she was definitely not going to get up for another session of lesson 12. A quick update! Yesterday we finally managed to pass lesson 14. My granddaughter has also mastered the selection of review words from lessons 10-13. So I started her today with lesson 15 (we always start with a review, and it went wonderfully, so I felt she was ready to start lesson 15). Impressive! Just wow! All About Reading is back on the horizon. She gets it now, and she leaves and runs again (and explains to Ziggy why the vowel has to say its long sound). I just had to be a little more patient. A vowel at the end of a syllable can be long. In the word we, as in We Love Emus, the vowel E is at the end of the syllable and says long E.

In these words, the vowel at the end of a syllable is long: hero, hello, music. What you described with two vowels with a consonant in between is an open syllable. If there is only one consonant between two vowels, the word is divided into syllables between the first vowel and the consonant. This keeps the first syllable “open”, meaning that it is not closed by a consonant behind the vowel. Vowels in open syllables are long. Here`s a blog post about open and closed syllables that explains this in more detail and examples. The sounds /ā/, /ē/, /ī/, /ō/ and /ū/ are long vowels. Examples of words starting with long vowels: If you want to learn more about the spelling of long sounds /e/, take a look at Unit 7 and Unit 21 in our online spelling course.

If the letter Y is at the end of a word or syllable, it is a vowel and is considered an open syllable. Words ending in Y make the E long or I long. Create short stories to anchor spelling patterns. – Group similar words and create a new one to help students remember them. This is similar to the ee and ea group photos from above with the words wet and natural. For example, with Ea, you might say, “John drank tea on the beach while an eagle was flying” or something like that.

Draw a picture or create your own poster with images of words with this spelling pattern and hang it in your room. If your child has heard accents, you can even play mimicking different accents just to encourage them to feel the different sounds in their mouth and hear how words can be pronounced differently in different regions. It might be fun to say mail and associate it with a long ā! Sounds simple enough, right? But did you know that long vowels can be written in four different ways and that each path follows a specific spelling pattern? They all lack a spelling of long-e and this is the spelling with the “e” with a flat line above… that I don`t know how to create with my computer keyboard and that I believe has a different definition used in medical writing, maybe in recipes, I`m not sure, but I`m trying to look for it, hence my presence here with this observation – and appreciation when someone can tell me how to type the e with a long phonetic line on it and what that means in the terminology of mathematical/medical symbols. Thank you very much. The /oo/ sound of O (as in Wolf, who, bass and uterus) is not the long sound of O. This is the third sound of O and O can say its third or fourth sound, anytime. Dictation – This is another fantastic activity, but I would do it after spending some time on the long e because it is more difficult for some students. When dictating words, also give students a hint about spelling, such as when you tell them it`s a vowel team or an open syllable.

I often dictate words that all have the same spelling scheme to avoid these problems. Vocal teams can produce long vowels. Vocal teams are two vowels that work together to produce a sound. For example, in the word eat, as in the emus eating seeds, the EA vowel team says Long E. These words have pairs of vowels that produce a long vowel sound: mail, sheep, soap. Over 300 English words are used by the EA vocal team to create the long E! Follow a specific structured and sequential scope and sequence when teaching a new phonetic skill, including all possibilities to spell long /ē/. Seeing these spellings all gathered in one place is enlightening for those of us who are already experienced readers and spellings. But I would only recommend using the chart as a reference, or with an older student who is already proficient in most of these recordings. I wouldn`t recommend overwhelming a beginner teaching these spellings at the same time. Instead, teach these basic patterns gradually, one at a time. Some time ago we had reached the point where long vowels were introduced into another reading program (alpha phonetics) and even then everything stopped.

At the time, I thought a program with more explicit and fun explanations could help. I took a break for a few months to teach him to read while reading to him every day, and then I started AAR from the beginning. She has also just started AAS and is in step 4. Y says a long E at the end of words like pretty, practical and city for most English accents. In fact, this is the most common way to spell the sound of the long E at the end of a word. Pretty and effect do not have long e-sounds. Both have a short E, or in some pronunciations “perty” can be pronounced well and the “uffect” effect can be pronounced (its schwa on the first syllable). 👉 Note: Many other words contain the IE spelling pattern.

This IE pattern is used with base words ending in the letter Y when a suffix is added. One piece of advice, if their confusion seems to return to short and long vowels, is to refer them to the order of the sounds for each vowel. All About Reading teaches the recordings in a specific order. For vowels, the first sound is the short sound and the second is the long sound (and then the other sounds, if any). Words that include the EA vowel team for spelling the long E sound: Since there are several options, expect students to misunderstand them sometimes, and tell them this! It`s okay for them to make mistakes, as long as it`s another valid spelling option and not something that doesn`t follow any rules. Through repeated exposure and practice, they will eventually internalize the correct spelling pattern for words. Excellent summary! It`s probably best to point out that any vowel can function as a silent e. If there is only one consonant between two vowels, the first is usually long, although in English this rule has many exceptions, usually related to the accent of the word, in which unstressed syllables are pronounced with a weaker and unclear vowel pronunciation, as in the first syllable of “pronunciation”. A long vowel is a vowel pronounced exactly like its name. For example, the word emu begins with the long E sound.

The e silent e writing pattern is actually not so common. It`s usually in the middle of a basic word. Examples are eve, delete and extreme. Of course, students must be safe with the magic syllable E. Lethal and ethane are open syllables. TH is a unique phonogram, so they are not divided into T and H when words are divided. So they`re deadly and e-than, so they`re long because they`re open syllables. Phonetic Grapheme Mapping – This is a great activity that really isolates the recordings so students can practice. You can download the book Phonics & Spelling Through Grapheme Mapping and follow the long lesson online or use my long list of electronic words to perform the same activity with sound boxes. See below for an example. EE and EA sometimes spell the long e sound at the beginning, middle, or end of a base word.

Neither is common anymore, so these simply need to be memorized. Explain to students that ea and ee are often in the middle of words and at the end of monosyllabic and polysyllabic words. Unfortunately, we usually have to remember these spellings.
