Above is a list of all holidays in Massachusetts. State, county and municipal offices are closed on the above days. Federal offices are closed only on federally recognized holidays (for example, New Year`s Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Washington`s birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth Independence Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas). The term “federal holiday” does not apply to individual states and the private sector, as each state is responsible for its vacation. Below is a list of holidays in Massachusetts and the dates they are observed for calendar years 2022 to 2024. In Massachusetts, some holidays are subject to laws that restrict the type of work that can be done, as well as the type of business and business activities that can remain open. Only public holidays marked with an asterisk (*) have certain restrictions. On holidays where no asterisk follows, business activities can proceed as usual. If a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the holiday is celebrated on the following Monday.

If a public holiday falls on a Saturday, all offices under the jurisdiction of a state government ministry are open to the public on the Friday immediately preceding a public holiday. * SATURDAY HOLIDAYS: Please note: Only retail stores are allowed to open during the summer holidays of Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. The Department of Labor Standards (617-626-6975) oversees the approval of local permits that allow businesses to open in Columbus, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas when they would otherwise not be able to open during certain hours or all of those days. * – Full restrictions apply to ALL businesses ** – Restrictions apply except for retail (1) Liquor stores must be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. 1A. Saturday holidays are celebrated on Saturday. Confidential management and employees: As many employees as possible should be laid off on the Friday immediately preceding the Saturday break. Whenever possible, the following Monday should be used as an alternative day off. Workers assigned to work are entitled to an additional day off.
