Legal Traineeship Scotland

“My internship at GLSS has been incredibly varied. During my internship, I gained experience in consulting positions in the fields of transport, criminal justice and social security. I have also worked in litigation for the Scottish Government and gained experience working on high-profile judicial reviews as well as the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry and the Mental Health Court for Scotland. The work was really interesting and rewarding, which was an important attraction for me and did not disappoint! The Society encourages interns and those interested in offering internships to think creatively about how these internships could be done. The internship is usually a two-year full-time training contract in an organization, but it is possible to carry out internships in a more flexible way. Please note that an internship must last two years or the equivalent for part-time training. Examples of flexible internships include: Our interns are responsible for their own work, but there will never be a lack of support. Each line is headed by an experienced lawyer who provides advice and supports the personal and professional development of his trainee. We also have a dedicated intern committee that manages the strategic oversight, planning and management of our interns and their internship path. The training covers a wide range of legal activities, ranging from core professional areas – including contracts, litigation, public and administrative law – to specialist consultancy work for the government. They can also expect to become familiar with the development, drafting and implementation of new legislation, which are central elements of the GLSS`s work. “As a GLSS lawyer, you have the opportunity to deal with very interesting legal topics on a daily basis. Many of the fundamental aspects of GLSS`s work – such as developing, drafting and implementing new legislation – are unique to government, and you will not have the opportunity to undertake this type of work in another internship.

In the Scottish Government, I have been a consultant on trade and economics as well as constitutional and civil law.

I also had the opportunity to work for the Scottish Government in litigation and to be a Member of the Scottish Parliament for six months. At each stage, I received a job that was both challenging and diverse. Flexible internships are usually arranged by the intern themselves, so you need to be proactive and contact employers.
